honestly my favorite part about dance is that we spend countless hours in the studio — sweaty, tired, looking a mess…

and then we go to compete and we get all dolled up in our sparkly, glamorous dresses and get to pretend to be a Barbie with our stage makeup on and get all tan and fresh white taped hardshoes. We get up onstage and have all eyes on us and we notice all the younger girls looking up to us.

    I love it. Every aspect.

LOTD then and now. Not quite sure how I feel about this.

I agree but if I remember correctly, Bernadette Flynn was like 16 during LOTD so I’m not sure how I feel about that either…

I didn’t know that ^^

I wouldn’t even practice in my underwear. Not to mention, perform.
Forget “wiggle, wiggle, wiggle” in my case it would be more like ” jiggle, jiggle, jiggle” lol.

but why? it looks really stupid??

I’ve thought about this a little and I think the reason it bugs me is it is only for the women. Yes flately goes shirtless but there is no exclusively male number with the boys in speedos. Its trying to appeal to the male gaze even when it has a mostly female audience.

YES. thank you. stole the words right out of my mouth.

I think because they’re more like knickers rather than high waisted shorts kind of thing it makes a big difference

theorangerogue and I had plenty a conversation about this at #TTF but basically Flately’s shows just blatantly objectify women…like, there is no subtly whatsoever. The girls barely even dance. They writhe around on stage until the guy comes along to distract them. It’s horrible.

Ugh yes. As much as I admire and appreciate the MASSIVE good that Mr. Flatley has done for Irish dance, I have trouble reconciling the power huge shows like Lord of the Dance have and the way some of those shows portray their female dancers.

Slow clap for the rest of the Irish dance world finally figuring this out

LOTD is pretty bad, I agree, but has anyone else seen Celtic Tiger? Personally I think that’s the worst offender of them all.

aAgreed.  Celtic Tiger is really really bad, I mean, Celtic Kitten…anybody…??? Writhing on the floor and all that crap

I’m done being the bottom of the pack dancer. I’m done being the dancer that cries after stamina. I’m done being the dancer who everyone grimaces at while she dances. I’m done being the dancer who gives up. I’m done being the dancer who people give a curt polite smile and say “that was great” insincerely after she’s finished her rounds just because that’s what she wants to hear. I’m done being the dancer who’s mom asks her if she’s dancing well enough to not get dead last at nationals. Im done being the dancer who doubts her talent constantly. I’m done with that. No more. I want to be larger than life, the girl who commands your attention even though you have no idea who I am. I’m going to be the biggest, best, most captivating Nobody you’ve ever seen.
